Contribution to Safe Working at Height - Manufacturer

JLG Industries (UK)
JLG Industries’ UK subsidiary has made a name for itself in training. Over the past 10 years it has trained over 15000 people in courses for operators, demonstrators and trainers. Its training client list is impressive, including Coca Cola, Carillion, Rolls Royce, the RAF, Sainsbury’s and even Buckingham Palace – although we have been unable to verify whether the Queen has a scissor or boom license, or perhaps a truck mount.

As one of the world’s leading equipment manufacturers, JLG has taken a leading role worldwide in promoting the safe use of aerial platforms, and nowhere has that commitment been more evident than in the UK.

Merlo
Italian manufacturer Merlo deserves recognition for its investment in training and education. The company’s training division, the Centre for Training and Machine Research, has a dedicated facility at Merlo’s head office where the company demonstrates equipment to its customers and conducts training in equipment including aerial platforms, mobile cranes, telehandlers and agricultural machinery. The centre opened in 2005, when it trained 84 people, and last year that number had risen to 666, a 90% increase on 2007. Merlo is now developing satellite training centres around Italy, with the aim of having 15 training locations staffed by more than 20 instructors.

Skyjack
Skyjack is shortlisted because of its undoubted commitment to creating a safe access industry. The company has a track record of supporting industry initiatives on training and safety, as well as participating in the design of standards in North America and Europe.

The company has also taken a very public stance on the topic of training and safe use of equipment, notably last year when company president Ken McDougall called on manufacturers, rental companies and end users to commit to making greater efforts in the safe use and proper maintenance of aerial platforms. The company has also been a tireless advocate of the need for a consistent, worldwide approach to operator training.
