The impact of the recession is made very clear in the surveys for 2009 and 2010, which show that rental revenues fell significantly in 2009 and remained at this lower level through 2010. As the surveys show, it was the developed rental markets in North America and western Europe that bore the brunt of the slowdown - not only were these the worst affected economies but they also supported the most mature rental industries.
This is reflected in depressed revenues, but also in a shifting of the geographical centre of gravity of the top 100, with the number of European companies falling from 56 in 2007 to 50 in 2010. For example, there are three Brazilian companies in the IRN100 now - there were none in 2007 - and six alone in Australia, which is enjoying a boom in its natural resources industries.
While there have been many changes, what is also striking about the list is the continuity among the bigger players. Some 47 of the top 50 companies in the 2007 listing can still be found in the 2010 survey.
This special five year compilation of IRN100 reports will provide you with a wealth of key data on the equipment rental market.
