There is no real need to look at figures from the recent past to know that it has been a difficult time for manufacturers and contractors, but the tables ranking the top 100 contractors over the past five years tell a fascinating story.
Construction Europe's ranking of the top European contractors is an established way of comparing the top companies in the sector. The construction world of five years ago was a different place, and few then would have successfully predicted the course of events that was to follow.
By pulling together the last five years data, Construction Europe provides an unrivalled look into the world of the contractor as they have battled against the economic elements.
Much has changed but, in many ways, it is just as interesting to notice what hasn't changed, how in some years there have been few major adjustments to some parts of the ranking. Many of the names are the same, year after year, as they consolidate their positions in the league table.
At other times, the new entries and the contractors who have disappeared from view are the key indicators. Sometimes a name has disappeared through acquisition, sometimes it has simply slipped out of the top 100 - either way, it adds to the overall picture.
A look at how the various countries are doing is another indicator of the way the market has performed. In some cases, several contracting groups from a country can be seen to be climbing steadily up the rankings at the expense of some other countries' contractors.
This five-year view is a great way to get a bigger picture of the construction industry, and while it is not easy to predict the future, there is much to learn from the recent past.
