The registration of cranes and their service record must be mandatory not voluntary.
This registration programme is a farce from the start. The amount of dangerous machinery and document altering amongst companies in the UK is widespread.
Companies are regularly using sub-standard bolts, pins and many other parts that aren't supplied by the original manufacturers.
All cranes in the UK should be registered in a similar way to cars, and a reputable body should be set up to visit the companies that own cranes to inspect maintenance records.
As I have typed this message I have just learned that a crane operator is fighting for his life after a container crane has collapsed in Southampton (13 07 09).
