W&F for €420 million waste water project

Written by Sandy Guthrie - 23 Jan 2012

A €420 million waste water pipeline contract has been awarded to Wayss & Freytag Ingenieurbau, the German tunnelling specialists which are part of the Dutch-based Royal Bam Group.

The German contract is for the construction of a 35km underground waste water pipeline. The project is part of a large-scale modernisation of the waste water system of the Emschergenossenschaft water management association.

The project involves the construction of a pipeline heading west from Dortmund, which is intended to carry wastewater to a water purification plant near Bottrop.

The underground pipeline, which will be built in the form of a tunnel, will vary in diameter from 1.6 to 2.8m and will run parallel to the River Emscher. The work will start next spring and is expected to take five years.
