Demolition plan for 2012 stadium?
Media reports in the UK press have suggested that the organisation behind the 2012 Olympic games to be held in London, London 2012, is considering a plan to demolish the stadium currently under construction once the games are completed. The reports suggest that the £525 million (US$930 million) stadium would be demolished and a Premier League football stadium built on the site. London 2012, however, has denied that it is seriously considering such a plan.
Apparantly the demolition option is just one of a number currently under consideration regarding the use of the stadium after the 2012 games, and is considered to be the least likely option on the table. The current favourite for the reuse of the 80,000 capacity venue is for it to be turned into a 25,000 capacity stadium with an athletics track and at least one ‘anchor’ tenant such as a football or rugby union team who would be able to fill the venue to full capacity on a regular basis.
