US$ 8.2 billion Saudi rail contract approved

Saudi Arabian authorities have awarded a SAR 30.8 billion (US$ 8.2 billion) contract for the second phase of the Haramain high speed rail project to Saudi-Spanish rail consortium Al Shoula.
The 450 km Haramain project is a high-speed passenger link for pilgrims between Jeddah and the holy cities of Mecca and Medina. This contract is for the second phase of construction which involves track laying, electrification, operations and a 12-year maintenance period.
The Saudi-Spanish consortium is led by the Saudi company Al Shoula and includes Spanish rail operator RENFE, Spanish rolling stock manufacturer Talgo, Invensys Rail's Spanish subsidiary, Dimetronic, Spanish rail administrator ADIF, as well as Spanish engineering companies INECO, OHL and Cobra.
