Manufacturer John Deere launched a complete US Tier 4 Final/EU Stage IV-compliant off-highway diesel engine line-up at Intermat, offering visitors a first glimpse at its approach to complying with the upcoming emissions laws.
Covering power ranges from 37 kW to 448 kW, the eight new engines use different technology platforms to meet the strict US and EU regulations, which will come into force from 2014.
For engines 56 kW and above, John Deere's Integrated Emissions Control system consists of a diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC), a diesel particulate filter (DPF) and a selective catalytic reduction (SCR) system. The DOC/DPF exhaust filter reduces particulate matter in exhaust emissions while cooled EGR and the SCR system reduce nitrogen oxides (NOx) to near-zero levels required by law.
John Deere manager, marketing support and sales engineering EAME Martin Ryley said, "Our building block approach to meeting the emissions laws meant that we delayed using SCR until it was absolutely necessary. We focussed on total fluid economy - for fuel savings and also using less diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) for the SCR process. The Tier 4 Final engines run on 1 to 3% DEF to fuel, so it's a very efficient fluid usage."
Lower DEF consumption also means the DEF tank size can be smaller - minimising the impact on vehicle applications while extending DEF filter service intervals and reducing operator involvement, according to Mr Ryley.
On display on the John Deere stand was the PowerTech PSS 9.0L, a 9 litre engine with a rated power output covering the 187 kW to 317 kW category.
