Konecranes is building what it describes as the biggest Goliath gantry crane of its type in the world.

The crane, with a lifting capacity of 2,000 tonnes and a span of 210 metres, will help build drill ships for the oil and gas industry st specialist Brazilian shipyard Ecovix-Engevix Construcões Oceanicas S.A. (Ecovix-Engevix).

"The Goliath gantry crane, with its combination of lifting capacity and rail span will be the biggest Goliath gantry crane in the world," said a Konecranes spokesman.

It will be delivered to the Rio Grande do Sul-based shipyard in October 2012. The parties have agreed not to disclose the value of the order but Goliath cranes with similar specification typically cost tens of millions of Euros, added the spokesman.

The crane will  raise productivity at the shipyard significantly, thanks to its ability to handle considerably larger blocks, which will shorten dry dock time for vessels, explained says Jussi Rautiainen, Konecranes shipyard cranes, general manager.

"We are very proud of our strong relationship with Ecovix-Engevix, " added Rautiainen, "We want to be known as the long-term partner of the world's leading shipyards, both today and in the future."
