According to the annual report of Dubai Municipality’s waste management department, the emirate has seen record growth in C&D waste production of 163% in 2007, in part fueled by the massive development work that is ongoing in the city. During that year, 27.7 million tonnes was removed from construction sites around the city, up from 10.5 million tonnes in 2006.

Currently, Dubai recycles around eight million tonnes through a public-private joint venture entered into last year with the Al Rostamani Group ar the Emirates Recycling Plant in the Al Lusally area of the city. The balance of the waste goes to landfill. According to the report, C&D waste makes up 75% of the waste generated in the city each year.

The report highlights that the Municiplaity’s efforts to recycle various types of waste are producing good results, with the gap between treated and non-treated waste narrowing year on year despite the fact that the total volume of waste beng generated by the city is substantially increasing year on year.
