Remediation Workhorses

Scott bros environmental services is using three Terex TA35 articulated dump trucks (ADTs) for the earthworks contract on a huge land remediation project in Cowpen Bewley in North-East UK. The scheme involves the regeneration of a 135 ha stretch of land, previously used as landfill site, into a wildlife park complete with hills, lagoons and purpose-built nesting sites for a variety of birds.
The project comprises five main stages to be completed over the next three years, during that time it is estimated that 3 million tonnes of clay and soil will be excavated and moved.
According to Scott Bros, the project is the largest and most ambitious land reclamation scheme currently underway in the UK. Since their arrival on site at the end of March 2005, the three 35 ton (31,8 tonne) ADTs have been involved in Phase 1 of the scheme, which involves moving more than 900000 m3 of overburden to cap the existing landfill site.
The haul route is a 1,5 km round trip. The trucks average more than four cycles an hour over a 10-hour working day, 5,5 days per week.
Fitted with 200 mm side extensions, they can carry up to 22 m3 of material on each trip, with their high rimpull allowing them to perform well on the haul route of heavily rutted clay.
Scott Bros’contracts manager, Chris Proudfoot, who took the initial decision to purchase the Terex trucks, said, “Since their arrival, the TA35s have made a big difference to our day-to-day operations. We are now ahead of schedule for completion of Phase 1, which we estimate will be concluded well before the deadline in November 2005.”
He added, “So far, the trucks have had no downtime - a crucial issue when working to a tight timescale. The side extensions Terex fitted on the truck have also contributed to the excellent progress with this project by allowing us to carry the optimum payload more efficiently.”
