Alfa Lift to get MAN engines

04 February 2019

The 3,000 tonne capacity Liebherr type HLC 150000 heavy lift offshore crane being built by China Merchants Heavy Industry for Oslo, Norway-based heavy transport and installation contractor Offshore Heavy Transport (see the offshore lifting feature in the October 2018 issue of ICST, also available online here: https://www.khl.com/international-cranes-and-specialized-transport/offshore-lifting-work-on-water/136031.article) will be fitted with engines from MAN Energy Solutions.

The Alfa Lift is a heavy installation crane vessel design with semi-submersible heavy transportation capabilities. The vessel is designed to install all types of bottom fixed offshore wind foundations and will also transport and install topsides and subsea modules, in addition to other heavy cargoes in the oil and gas industry.

MAN’s scope of supply covers four 12V32/44CR generator sets with a total output of 28,800 kW. The four-stroke engine has a bore and stroke of 320 x 440 mm.

The new Alfa Lift vessel will be built in China with delivery due in the fourth quarter of 2020. The order is for a single vessel, with options for three more.

“We are very pleased to have won this order,” said Lex Nijsen, vice president, head of Four-Stroke Marine at MAN Energy Solutions. “The MAN 32/44CR engine’s multiple references – as well as its excellent references for similar projects within this very segment – were a decisive factor in its selection.”

MAN Energy Solutions describes the MAN 32/44CR engine as future-orientated technology whose common-rail technology delivers significant fuel savings and low operating costs. Nijsen added that the engine meets the customer’s requirements for modern and reliable technology that would continue to deliver high outputs even at high ambient temperatures, a dynamic load response and minimal exhaust emissions.
