In March of 2018, Sarens worked on behalf of client Van Oord to load out a 580t pile template in Wallsend, Newcastle Upon Tyne, United Kingdom.
Van Oord is responsible for installing 102 three-legged jacked foundations for their client, Scottish Power Renewables (part of the Iberdrola Group), which is building the East Anglia ONE offshore wind farm in the North Sea.
Sarens won the project by offering exactly what the client needed: 21m link spans, which Sarens could supply internally. Most equipment arrived from the UK, while the link spans were delivered from the Netherlands to the UK via the client’s barge. It took one day to set up all of the equipment and prepare it for the operation.
The equipment included:
- 3x 6 line SPMTs + PPUs
- 6x CS250s with 4m of cartridges and bracings
- 400T mobile crane
- 220T mobile crane
- 21m bridge beams (converted to link spans)
- Ballast pumps and winches
To transport the 580T pile template, which had a 38m diameter, Sarens had to support it on all node points and ensure that it was in line with the link span design, which meant it had to be picked up within millimetres of the transport design plan. It was picked up, driven back to land all the remaining link spans, and then driven on.
