BTB used a 500 tonne capacity Liebherr LTM 1500-8.1 to replace a cross at the top of the Berlin Dom in Germany

In August German rental company BTB lifted into place a new gold plated cross on the cupola of the Berlin Dom (cathedral). BTB used an 500 tonne capacity Liebherr LTM 1500-8.1 eight axle telescopic mobile crane.

The new cross had to be lifted to a hook height of 100 m at 65 m radius. The LTM 1500-8.1 was erected with 50 m of telescopic boom, 77 m luffing fly jib, the Y-suspension system and 135 tonnes of counterweight.

Corrosion caused irreparable damage to the cross, which was removed in December 2006. A new one was built by a metal fabricator in Bavaria.It is 15 m tall and weighs 12.5 tonnes - 1.5 kg of which is the gold foil plating applied by a specialist company in Berlin.
