Brazil´s construction equipment sector is worth BRL 10 billion (US$ 4.7 billion) annually, according to the latest research by Sobratema, the Brazilian Association for Technology in Equipment and Maintenance.

Speaking ahead of Latin America´s largest construction show, M&T Expo (2 to 6 June, Sao Paulo), Sobratema president Afonso Mamede said 50000 units are sold every year in Brazil, with sales of "micro machines" - mini excavators and wheeled loaders - in particular, the fastest growing sector.

"Previously the trend was for mid to large excavators and wheeled loaders, with manufacturers importing mini machines into Brazil," said Mr Mamede. "But now all major manufacturers have production facilities here in Brazil."

Research by Sobratema, added Mr Mamede, also shows that on- and off-highway trucks account for 25% of all construction equipment sold annually in the country.

The government´s Growth Acceleration Program (PAC), its commitment to construct the Mercosul trade corridors that run through the country, and preparations for the 2014 FIFA World Cup, were the main drivers behind sales of construction equipment in Brazil, said Mr Mamede.
