CRC moves 400,000 pound transformer
13 May 2009
Crane Rental Corporation (CRC) in the US contracted with Progress Energy Florida (PEF) to move a 400,000 pound (181 tonne) transformer from Stanton Energy Center in east Orlando to PEF's new Tanner Road substation, also in Orlando.
CRC's 500 US ton (454 tonne) gantry system was set up at each site to load and unload the transformer.
Transportation of the transformer was handled by CRC with an Oshkosh prime mover and 12 lines of Goldhofer hydraulic platform trailer. The trailer lines were configured side-by-side to give the proper weight bearing pressure for transportation permits. The load took up most of two lanes and had to be moved at night with the Orange County Sheriff's department providing traffic control assistance. The 11 mile trip took almost two hours. The transformer will be moved again when its final foundation is finished.
