Three Hitachi Sumitomo crawler cranes have been delivered for oil and gas drilling and installation in Indonesia.

Hitachi Construction Machinery (Europe) was able to assemble and ship the 40 tonne capacity SCX400T crawlers to PT Petro Papua in seven-and-a-half weeks, a fast delivery time which was crucial in securing the sale, said the manufacturer.

PT Petro Papua supplies drilling services, including the operation of land rigs, to the oil and gas industry. The Jakarta-based company is a sub-contractor for Chevron Indonesian - the country's largest producer of crude oil. It will use the three new Hitachi Sumitomo cranes for the installation of new equipment.

Mark Burghoorn, HCME Special Equipment and Crawler Sales commented, "We took over this project from Indonesian dealer, PT Traktor Nusantar, because we already had these machines in stock at our Oosterhout factory in The Netherlands.

"We were in competition with other manufacturers to win the order, but our guaranteed delivery time meant that we were successful. The challenge was to assemble, add bespoke customer requirements and then repaint and test the machines, before the shipment left Antwerp for Jakarta - all within the timescale," Burghoorn concluded.

"The successful delivery of this project is a good example of the close cooperation between HCME, Hitachi Construction Machinery Co., Ltd. (HCM) and Hitachi Sumitomo. It would not have been possible to deliver the three SCX400Ts on time without excellent communication throughout the project."

The SCX400T cranes were modified with an auxiliary jib with a five-tonne hook. The 40 tonne machines have a 32 m telescopic boom and a maximum line pull of 85kN.
