Port chosen for Denmark’s largest offshore wind farm

RWE has chosen Port of Thorsminde to carry out operation and maintenance (O&M) on Denmark’s largest offshore wind farm, Thor.

The company have said that the wind farm, which will be built off the Danish west coast, approximately 22km from the port, will have a capacity of 1,000 megawatts and will be capable of producing enough green electricity to supply the equivalent of more than one million Danish households.

Part of the port will be used during the construction phase of the wind farm, and it is expected that the project’s first survey works will be carried out from the port.

Smaller components will be shipped out and construction crews will be transported to their offshore workplace. As a result, RWE plans to open its base at Thorsminde by Spring 2023, with the wind farm expected to be fully operational by 2027.

RWE has also confirmed that it intends to contribute to the local economy and community by creating up to 60 permanent jobs at the operations and maintenance base. This includes technicians, engineers, nautical personnel as well as crew for the service vessels.

Both RWE and the Port of Thorsminde have signed a corresponding Letter of Intent (LoI) to support the arrangement. The agreement will last 30 years, with the option for a five-year extension. Total investment costs for Thor have been estimated at around DKK 15.5 billion (€2 billion).

The Thor project will help to support RWE’s goal to triple its global offshore wind capacity from 2.4 to gigawatts by 2030. RWE is also involved in the Danish Rødsand 2 offshore wind farm, which is located south of the Danish island Lolland.
