The world's longest combined road and rail tunnel will be under the Fehmarnbelt between Denmark and Germany.

Rental companies Ramirent and Zeppelin have formed a joint venture to combine resources and expertise in a bid to support construction of the world’s longest immersed tunnel – the Fehmarnbelt project.

Linking the Danish and German coast, the €5.5 billion Fehmarnbelt Fixed Link is planned to stretch 18 km, consisting of a four-lane motorway and a double-track rail line. The start date for construction is the summer of 2015, with completion scheduled for 2021.

The final consortium of contractors for the project is still being decided, after which other subcontractors – including rental companies – can bid to support the project.

Zeppelin is based in Germany while Ramirent has a rental operation in Denmark. In a combined statement, the companies said they could offer a range of equipment and services to the Fehmarnbelt contractors on both sides of the project.

They said this would include modular space resources, temporary infrastructure, energy and climate solutions, access control, facility management, waste management, general equipment rental services, maintenance and repair, logistics and safety management and consulting.

Ramirent president and CEO Magnus Rosén said that a project of this magnitude required international collaboration.

“By combining our complementary capacities, know-how and services we are offering customised one-stop solutions for the entire lifecycle of the project on both the Danish and the German side.

“Furthermore, we share our knowledge of the labour market and business practices in both countries.”

And Zeppelin Rental chairman Wolfgang Hahnenberg the companies had a profound understanding of how to face and meet challenging projects, timelines and business objectives.

“With our integrated site and project management services, we support customers concentrating on their core business and therefore improving their efficiency and productivity. Together with Ramirent we are simplifying business,” he said.
