Italian manufacturer Airo has introduced an explosion-proof version of its SF 1700-E/L-2E self propelled scissor lift.

The 19.26 m working height platform has been adapted to conform to the ATEX Directive for Category 3G (zone 2) Gas Group IIB, Temperature Class T3 (2000C).

Having studied the platform's mechanical, hydraulic and, particularly, electric and electronic systems, some modifications were made. The standard battery was replaced with a 48V 750Ah traction battery, consisting in a corrosion-proofed steel box containing cells complying with standard EN 60079-15. Explosion-proof audible devices, a pneumatic horn and explosion-proof rotating beacons were fitted.

The electric motors are enclosed in explosion-proof casings and constantly monitored by thermal sensors that stop the platform's movements whenever the safety temperature is exceeded.

All the electromechanical devices (relays, fuses, etc.) and power actuators (emergency switches, contactors, power supplies, etc.) that can cause dangerous sparks or arcs are enclosed in explosion-proof metal casings; the solenoid valves heads and the battery terminals are sealed with protective resins.
