Weldex, the largest crawler crane rental company in the UK, has taken delivery of the first of two 650 tonne capacity Terex Superlift 3800 lattice boom crawler cranes. It is also the first unit of this model in the UK and it will be followed by the second in November.

Lower down the crawler crane capacity scale Weldex has recently ordered multiple lattice boom units from Liebherr-Werk Nenzing in Austria. The first five cranes, in capacities from 100 to 250 tonnes, were as follows: two LR 1100s and one each LR 1130, LR 1160 and LR 1250. All have been delivered. The others, ordered in April, include another LR 1130, three more LR 1250s and an LR 1300.

Maximum load moment of the Terex Superlift 3800 is 8,484 tonne-metres, a figure of the type that helps put Weldex in the top ten largest crane fleets in the world, according to the 2015 IC50 ranking. The 2015 IC50 ranking, published in the June issue of International Cranes and Specialized Transport magazine, saw Weldex move up into tenth place from 11th last year.

The new heavy lift cranes replace a pair of 600 tonne capacity CC 2800-1 crawlers bought in 2008.

Dougie McGilvray, Weldex managing director, said, “These latest acquisitions are part of an ongoing investment plan designed to ensure that the Weldex fleet reflects the latest technology and most recent innovations. There is also a growing demand on many projects for cranes that are no more than seven years old.”

Headquartered in Inverness (Scotland) with a depot in Derbyshire (England) the company was founded in 1979 by the McGilvray family and now operates across the UK and internationally.
