Liebherr-Werk Nenzing has reported a 100% sales increase of cargo handling equipment in 2011, compared to 2010.

By the end of 2011, 25 mobile harbour cranes will have been delivered to customers in the Americas said Nenzing - the cargo handling division of Liebherr, headquartered in Austria. This included, it said, 18 machines to Latin America and seven to Canada and the USA.

"Brazil, once again, is the key market. With 12 mobile harbour cranes delivered in 2011, the population has grown to 42 machines, making Liebherr the unchallenged market leader in the biggest economy on the continent," claimed a company spokesman.

The sales include a range of models for a number of applications, for example, Intermaritima, situated in the Port of Aratu, opted for the 4-rope version of the LHM 280 for dedicated bulk handling. The same type of crane was purchased by Companhia Operadora Portuaria do Itaqui.

Fortesolo Serviços Integrados and Harbor Operadora Portuária also needed new bulk handling equipment in Paranagua, but decided to go for the next machine up in the range, the LHM 320. Serra Morena, in Rio Grande, has a new LHM 280, and an LHM 550, now working side by side with two LHM 320s.

Contractor Tecondi took delivery of its fourth LHM 600, the biggest in the range. Another example is the sale of the first two super post panamax gantry cranes for the Port of Paranaguá.

Chile is also demonstrating its rise in the region with the delivery of an LHM 550 equipped with Pactronic hybrid drive system to Portuaria Lirquén, among other deliveries. The port now boasts six Liebherr mobile harbour cranes capable of handling two vessels simultaneously. The third pedestal-fixed LFS-series was also delivered to Chile. The LFS 600 went to Electroandina.

Despite an uneven economic environment, Liebherr said it has just finalised a contract for two more LHM 600 for a Chilean container operator, bringing the total of this model in Latin America to eight. "This development is showing the huge demand for mobile harbour cranes with the highest capacity (208 tonnes), as well as the biggest outreach (58 m)."
