London Gateway, the new shipping port and logistics centre in the UK, will use cranes from Cargotec and ZPMC.

The Chinese manufacturer Zenhua Heavy Industries, (formerly Zenhua Port Machinery Company), will supply eight ship to shore container cranes in time for the multi-billion project to open in the fourth quarter of 2013. Cargotec will provide automated stacking cranes and straddle carriers. ZPMC will also provide rail mounted gantry cranes for the port's rail terminal.

Initial capacity will be 1.6 million TEU (twenty foot equivalent container units), according to port owner DP World, based in Dubai. It will be a major new UK port and Europe's largest logistics park, 40 km east of London on the north bank of the River Thames. The cranes will be able to handle the next generation container vessels of 18,000 TEU capacity.

Around 700 construction jobs and 300 port jobs will be created in coming months, DP World said, continuing that as many as 36,000 jobs will be created in the long term from the project, providing £3.2 billion (US$ 5 billion) to the UK economy each year. More than 600 jobs have already been created since January 2010 when major construction work started, according to DP World.

"London Gateway will provide the world class service that our customers have come to expect from DP World across the globe, using the most advanced equipment and technology. London Gateway's location is unique, bringing the world's largest ships directly to Europe's largest logistics park, providing long-term value for our customers and UK business," said Mohammed Sharaf, DP World chief executive.
