UK contractor Costain has been appointed as part of a consortium for a £750 million (€1.03 billion) project improving the M4 motorway around Newport, Wales.

The scheme, which is a three-way joint venture with Vinci Construction Grands Projets and Taylor Woodrow, includes the development of 24km of new motorway.

It will also feature a 2.5km cable-stayed viaduct crossing of the River Usk, and improvement to junctions 23 and 29 of the M4.

There is expected to be a public inquiry into the motorway upgrades, to be held next year. Construction work has been provisionally scheduled for the spring of 2018.
