Construction complete on world’s largest airport

Construction has been completed on Beijing’s Daxing International Airport in China, which is set to be the world’s largest in terms of passengers travelling through the international transport hub.

The project has been delivered three months ahead of schedule after construction began in 2015. With the city’s existing airport at capacity, the new airport will open in September this year and will have the capacity to accommodate 72 million passengers each year by 2025.

The terminal building is 700,000m² with the Ground Transportation Centre also covering an area of 80,000m².

In total there are four runways at the airport which will see up to 630,000 flights in a year.

The project has also been designed to be future proof with the capability to be upgraded when necessary, adding further capacity for up to 100 million passengers and four million tonnes of cargo each year.

The six-pier radial design of the airport was led by Zaha Hadid Architects and has had a strong emphasis on efficiency and usability.
