Construction of $14 billion reservoir starts in China

Construction work on a reservoir costing more than 100 billion yuan (US$12.3 billion) has started in China’s Chongqing municipality.

The Zaodu Reservoir project will protect towns along the Qijiang River as well as increasing the annual water supply in the area by 179 million cubic metres, according to China Global Television Network (CGTN), the international division of state broadcaster China Central Television.

The reservoir is due to start operating in October 2027.

It will also increase the irrigation area in the region by more than 11,300 hectares (27,922 acres), according to CGTN.
