Eisele's Liebherr LTM 11200-9.1 holds the entire roof structure of a new coal depot at Staudinger power station in Grosskrotzenburg, Germany

Eisele AG has installed the roof of Europe's largest coal depot at the Staudinger power station in Grosskrotzenburg, Germany.

The modernisation of the power plant includes the new enclosed coal depot and a new power station block in the space left by the old depot.

Until now coal for the plant was stored on an open coal tip and moved to the storage point with the help of wheeled loaders. The new enclosed and fully automated storage system is designed to substantially reduce dust and noise emissions.

It includes two 220,000 tonne capacity circular coal depots, each 125 m diameter and 58 m tall. The roof structure consists of eight 40 tonne, 55 m long segments.

Once all the segments had been installed, a 1,200 tonne capacity Liebherr LTM 11200-9.1 mobile crane was positioned to hold the entire structure centrally until the weight could be distributed equally onto the ring beam element, and there was no longer any risk of it being deformed.

Another six cranes, operating in two three-crane formats, were used to install the segments.

This project was one of the first jobs for the LTM 11200-9.1, which Eisele took poession of in July. The crane has also been working on wind energy projects.
