GAM wins €6m wind power contract

26 September 2008

GAM has won a €6 million contract with Suzlom Wind Energy Spain to transport and assemble 49 wind turbines in four new wind farms in Almeria, Spain. GAM has a wind power division that specialises in the transportation, installation and maintenance of wind farms.

GAM has previously won wind power contracts with companies including Acciona Wind Power, Gamesa and Vestas. In 2007 it transported more than 250 wind turbines from factories to Spanish ports for export and installed another 250 wind turbines. Its turnover in wind power last year was €19 million.

GAM's wind turbine work is part of its diversification strategy that has seen it enter new markets such as ports, industry, railway maintenance, events, power rentals and gardening equipment. These new areas now represent a third of group turnover.

The company has also expanded outside Spain, with operations now in Bulgaria, Portugal, Poland, Romania and, most recently, in Mexico City, Mexico. It will open up in Sao Paulo, Brazil later this year.

The October issue of IRN will include an interview with Carlos Fernández Araoz, GAM's general manager.
