When a historic building in Covent Garden, London underwent major reconstruction a HAKITEC 750 temporary roof structure provided total weather protection throughout the works.

HAKI provided four separate roof sections to cover the Grade II listed building, which had an additional storey built and a new permanent roof installed. The £35 million project also involved removing all the internal floors and rebuilding the interior to create a new head office for an international technology company.

The roof was supplied through Harsco Infrastructure, the sole UK approved hirer of HAKI's temporary roof and shelter range. Throughout the project, HAKI worked closely with Harsco Infrastructure and the main scaffolding contactor, SGC Scaffolding, to ensure a successful solution for the project.

The roof was installed using a 'roll-out' method, which allows all work to be done from one gable end scaffold with no need to climb beams. This system ensured a safe system of work that complied with Work at Height Regulations and suited the restricted space requirements on site. The roof's unique design allowed it to be opened at any time to allow the craning of materials.

Dave Southall, director of SGC, said, "HAKI and Harsco Infrastructure's experience of scaffolding and temporary works engineering meant that they immediately understood our requirements and worked closely with us to develop the right solution. Our key requirements of safety and cost-effectiveness were easily met by this system."

The project was finished in April 2010.
