Heijmans joint venture in Dutch canal contract

A Heijmans joint venture has reached a financial agreement of €133 million for the Dutch PPS canal project.
The project comprises the construction of a third lock chamber and the Princess Beatrix Lock, as well as widening the Lek Canal.
The joint-venture – named Sas van Vreeswijk – consists of Heijmans, TDP, Besix Group, RebelValley and Jan De Nul. BNG Bank, DekaBank and KBC Bank will part-fund the project.
Rijkswaterstaat (the Directorate-General of Public Works & Water Management), has said it wants to improve the passage through the Lek Canal near Nieuwegein, Netherlands, and reduce waiting times at the Beatrix Lock for inland waterway vessels. The Lek Canal, which incorporates the Princess Beatrix Lock, connects the Amsterdam Rhine Canal to the Lek River, and is an important waterway between the ports of Rotterdam and Amsterdam.
The work is expected to be completed by 2019, before a 27-year maintenance period will begin – also run by the joint venture.
