HSS buys UK power company Abird

01 November 2012

Within a week of its sale to a new private equity owner HSS Hire has made a major acquisition, buying Abird Generator Hire, a leading UK power rental company with seven depots and 60 staff in the UK and Wales. The price was not disclosed.

Abird’s current management team will remain with the business and it will continue to run under its own brand. HSS said acquisition would complement its existing fleet, offering a wider range of large capacity and specialist generators in the growing temporary power market.

Last week HSS was sold by previous owners Och-Ziff and Aurigo to Exponent Private Equity.

Chris Anspack, managing director of Abird, said; “Today's announcement is an important milestone in the growth of our company. I am delighted that the deal has been successful. We have been looking at the best options to manage our growing business.

“While Abird Generator Hire will continue to trade as a separate brand, joining the HSS Hire Group presents a great opportunity to unlock new investment as we embark on the next stage of our growth and development.”

Chris Davies, chief executive officer at HSS Hire, said HSS was “really impressed by their business, the quality of product and service offering as well as a strong track record. We look forward to working with Chris and his team to further strengthen and develop Abird Generator Hire's leading position over the coming years.”

Abird has been operating in the UK for 50 years. It rents generators in the 20 kVA to 1250 kVA sizes and also has a fleet of lighting towers.
