IDB funds Trinidad wastewater build

17 December 2012

The Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) is to loan Trinidad and Tobago US$ 246.5 million for the construction of two wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) and their attendant trunk sewers in San Fernando and Malabar.

The five-year build will include the construction of a 26 km sewerage network. The San Fernando and Malabar WWTPs are part of a three-phase programme, the total cost of which will be US$ 546.5 million, aimed at improving environmental conditions on the islands.

Phase II, to be supported by a US$ 100 million IDB loan, will continue institutional strengthening efforts and integrate the sewerage network for connection to the new WWTPs.

Phase III, which will benefit from US$ 200 million in financing, will expand the wastewater collection system to cover the population in catchment areas that are currently using septic tanks and other individual sanitation solutions.
