IPAF's North American Convention is this week

Ontario Ministry of Labor director Cordelia Clarke Julien will speak at the IPAF North American Convention, set for Oct. 1-2 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.
In her capacity as director, training and safety programs, prevention office, she will discuss what all responsible parties – employers, supervisors and workers – can do to make the workplace safer and prevent illness and injury.
Brad Boehler, Skyjack president, will examine the impact of proposed changes to the design standard for aerial work platforms. He will explore ANSI A92.20 and its potential impact on requirements for load sensing, increased stability, increased wind rating and control box changes.
Other speakers in the line-up include Kevin O’Shea, Hydro Mobile, who will give a presentation on buying used mast climbing work platform (MCWP) equipment and Bill Doucette, NES Rentals vice-president for human resources, will provide an overview of how rules are a key aspect of building the foundation for a safety culture.
There will be breakout sessions on AWPs and MCWPs, and a panel discussion on the subject of whether additional training should be required for complex machines.

It will take place at the Crowne Plaza Toronto Airport Hotel. A tour of the Skyjack facility will be held on the afternoon of October 1, followed by a networking event in the evening.

Wednesday, October 1

Transportation will be provided from the convention host hotel (Crowne Plaza), departing at noon. Lunch will be served as part of the tour. Aerial work platform manufacturers work with standards bodies and health and safety organizations so that their products are in accordance with regulatory requirements. The next two or three years will see some changes in those standards around the world, not least in North America. Those changes will have an impact on manufacturers, but more importantly, rental companies, owners and operators. The changes mean that machines will be both physically and operationally different. Brad Boehler, President of Skyjack, will explore some of the “heritage” of ANSI A92.20 and the impact this may have in the North American market – specifically the requirements for load sensing, increased stability, increased wind rating and control box changes. He will highlight that cost may be only one factor that operators will be faced with as the use of extension decks, accessories and increased machine weight are discussed.

Rick will introduce IPAF to attendees and provide a summary of benefits and activities IPAF is involved in, including industry best practices, accident reporting, PAL Cards and smart technology, standard development and technical guidance.
