The 600 tonne high girder bridge type G²│K 600, operated by heavy-duty transport company Kahl Schwerlast, made light work of transporting two transformers weighing 475 tonnes each from the Mönchengladbach district of Rheydt in Germany to Dörpen in Lower Saxony.
Grid operator Tennet is upgrading a substation in Dörpen, and the two 685 MVA transformers, built by General Electric, have a key role to play in the project. They will be used to convert energy from wind power.
Built by the Memmingen branch of Goldhofer in co-operation with Greiner GmbH, the G²│K 600 was created for exceptional journeys such as this one covering a total distance of 681 kilometres by road and barge.
The main challenge on the journey was the 7.8 km section between the Korschenbroich district of Kleinenbroich and Kaarst, which involved passage over five bridges, including a railway bridge.
“Without the G²│K 600, we could not have handled the project,” said André Krause, the Kahl employee who was responsible for the smooth running of the operation together with project chief Olaf Weltz. “It was the G²│K 600 system that made it possible for the two transformers to be shipped.”
