Kalmar RTG first for Uruguay

03 January 2012

Cargo handling company Montecon in Uruguay has ordered Kalmar E-One2 rubber tyred gantry cranes. They will be the first for a port terminal in the country.

Also ordered were 15 Kalmar Ottawa terminal tractors. Delivery is scheduled for the second quarter of 2012 and the equipment will be deployed at the port of Montevideo.

Montecon has further development plans for the port. "We are delighted to be working in partnership with Montecon as it gears up to expand its operations in Montevideo. Joining the existing Kalmar terminal tractors and empty container handlers, these latest models place Montecon at the forefront of cargo handling technology in the region," said Marcelo Massa, Cargotec Argentina managing director.

Montecon's new RTGs are 41 tonne capacity models with a lift height of 1 over 5 and a span of 6+1 wide. They will be all-electric, without any hydraulics, which means longer maintenance intervals, lower operating costs and fewer emissions, Cargotec said. A 30% fuel saving is claimed from the variable speed generator (VSG) engines, compared to conventional diesel powered RTGs.

Also featured is the Kalmar Smartrail auto steering and container position verification system. For safety and damage protection the RTGs will have a fail-safe programmable logic controller system and anti-collision system with laser scanners.
