Krøll K1800 earns its keep stateside

USA-based general contractor JCM NorthLink has been using a K1800 flat top hammerhead crane from Danish crane manufacturer Krøll since it bought it brand-new in January 2011. According to Terry McGettigan, equipment superintendent at JCM MorthLink, the tower crane has worked long hours along with multiple shifts with a better than 99 % reliability. “It was originally set up with a 75 m jib with a maximum capacity of 60 tonnes and was used on a tunnel project,” explained McGettigan. “In 2014 the K1800 was relocated to another tunnel project where it was reconfigured with an 87 m jib which could handle a tip load of 10.5 tonnes.”
The tower crane is being used on the Northgate Link Extension in Seattle, USA. This project will connect the Northgate, Roosevelt and University District neighbourhoods to downtown Seattle and the airport via light rail. Work includes excavation of twin 4.3 mile (7 km) light
rail tunnels, excavation for three light rail stations, and the construction of 23 cross passages to connect the twin tunnels.
According to Krøll, its cranes are durable, operator-friendly, safe and have low maintenance requirements. It says all its components are traceable back to the original manufacturers, ensuring that they can easily be replaced.
