According to a study commissioned by Brazil's federal government, the country has a wind energy generation potential of 143.5 GW from coastal winds.
The state of Ceará is the country's leading region for wind power and a number of farms have been built along its coastline.
Crane services company Makro Engenharia will help install 12 wind farms in Brazil for Argentinean business group IMPSA. Three are in Ceará and include 75 turbines. Work started in the second half of this year.
To carry out the work, the company has acquired two 550 tonne capacity crawler cranes
Makro Engenharia previously purchased 10 cranes for wind energy work, with capacities ranging from 55 to 440 tonnes. It was also expecting to purchase another 600 tonne crawler later this year.
"Furthermore, the company has been negotiating the purchase of larger cranes, as it anticipates big projects in 2009 and 2010 not only in northern and north eastern Brazil but also all over the Brazilian territory," it says.
