Sumitomo Mitsui Construction has taken delivery of two Liebherr 160 HC-L 8/16 Litronic luffing jib tower cranes to help build showrooms and workshops for Tan Chong & Sons Motor Company in Singapore.

The building will be seven storeys high and will include car showrooms, workshops and offices. The developer and owner of the project is Tan Chong & Sons Motor Company (Singapore) Pte Ltd, a division of the Malaysia-based Tan Chong Motor Holdings Berhad (TCMH) Group. Main contractor is Sumitomo Mitsui Construction Co Ltd.

The two tower cranes are owned by lifting and materials handling specialist Access Systems Technology Pte Ltd in Singapore. Work for the two cranes will include lifting loads of between 3 and 4 tonnes.

Alan Tan, AST operations manager, said, “Part of the existing facilities are still in use and the site is tightly confined by neighbouring commercial buildings and by roads that run directly in front of and behind the site. Using a crane with a long boom was out of the question, and a luffing jib operation was necessary.

“The need here is for speed and flexibility. With an existing structure in place and the new project being constructed around it, parts of the site are difficult to access unless you have really precise lifting. Precision lifting can sometimes mean slow progress but the two cranes working together overcome this and we have worked out a deployment strategy with Sumitomo to ensure optimum efficiency.”

The project is due for completion in the fourth quarter of 2014.
