International consultancy and construction company Mace has completed the lifting phase of what is claimed to be the world’s longest cantilevered building.

One Za’abeel is a residential and commercial development project in Dubai, UAE, which comprises two towers connected by a link structure measuring 226m.

Mace lifted the final 900-tonne section of the link structure at a speed of five metres per hour over the course of four days.

The ascent was undertaken with the use of a lifting system made up of Strand Lifting Units (SLUs) with three components: a hydraulic hollow jack a tensile member with steel strands, and anchorages for the load.

Jason Millett, CEO for Consultancy at Mace, said, “The Link ascent at One Za’abeel is a record-breaking achievement, made possible through the collaboration and fantastic work of engineering, consultancy and construction teams.”

The final link section was raised to a height 100m off the ground and attached to the first part of the suspended structure, which was installed over the course of 14 days back in August. The first section weighed 8,500 tonnes and required the use of 24 jacks to complete its installation.

The One Za’abeel development, which straddles a live six-lane carriageway, is being led by development and investment company Ithra Dubai.

When construction is complete, One Za’abeel will include premium office space, 263 high-end residential units, a retail podium and 493 ultra-luxury hotel rooms and serviced apartments.

According to Mace the newly-raised link structure will offer 360-degree views of Dubai and will have, “an unparalleled choice of fine dining, luxury hospitality and entertainment venues” in addition to an observation deck and a rooftop terrace with an infinity pool.

The project developers are also aiming to achieve a Gold LEED certification, in line with the UAE Vision 2021 and its sustainable development goals.
