New €152 million Stansted terminal

London Stansted Airport has been granted planning permission by Uttlesford District Council to build a new £130 million (€152 million) terminal.

The proposed 34,000m2 building, spanning three floors, will be dedicated to arrivals, with larger immigration and baggage reclaim areas, new retail facilities, improved access for onward transport options and a public forecourt.

Designed by Pascall & Watson Architects, the terminal will be built inside the airport’s existing footprint, located adjacent to the current terminal and the Radisson Blu Hotel.

With work due to begin towards the end of 2018, and continue for up to three years, Stansted’s owner Manchester Airport Group (MAG) said construction of the new building will take place away from the existing terminal so that disruption to passengers is kept to a minimum.

Starting this summer, improvement work will also be carried out on the existing terminal to make more space for check-in and security by 2022.

Once the new addition is complete, Stansted will be the only airport in the UK operating dedicated arrivals and departures terminals.

Andrew Cowan, CEO of Stansted Airport, said, "Stansted is a national asset and our investment will continue to boost competition and support economic growth, jobs and international connectivity for London and the East of England."

He added, “It has always been our vision to create the best experience for our growing number of passengers and airline customers, and we have already invested over £150 million [€175.6 million] to update our terminal and satellite facilities.”
