28 February 2012

Spanish contractor OHL (Obrascon Huarte Lain) in a joint venture with Polish group PBG has been awarded a €221 million road and tunnel building project in Poland.

The Polish government-awarded contract, 55% owned by OHL and 45% owned by PBG, is for a 2.4 km road in the northern Polish city of Gdansk linking the city's airport to the port of Gdansk.

Its key feature is the twin tunnels running under the mouth of the Vistula River in the Baltic Sea. Each tunnel will be 1,075m long with a circular cross section 11m in diameter, featuring two carriageways. OHL said a 12.6m-diameter Hidroshield tunnel boring machine would be specially designed and commissioned for the project.

Construction is scheduled for completion in three years.
