Perkins has launched a new off-highway diesel engine at the BICES exhibition in Beijing – the first production model designed and built at its Wuxi factory, China.

The new 1104D-E44 is an electronic 4.4 litre, 4-cylinder engine that is said to offer higher levels of fuel tolerance and operational robustness while meeting EU Stage IIIA / US Tier 3 equivalent emission standards.

The 1104D-E44 will be available in two versions – the 1104D-E44T, which is a turbocharged unit offering power ratings of 60 kW to 74.5 kW. The more powerful 1104D-E44TA is a turbocharged after-cooled model that tops out at 106 kW at 2200 rpm.

Perkins said the engine was built on its mechanical 1104D-44 model, and aims to provide OEMs with greater choice and flexibility.

The engine features a new upgraded fuel system that is said to increase tolerance to poor quality diesel, supported by improved filtration to capture any debris present.

Industrial open power unit and generator set versions will be available when production begins in the in the latter half of 2014, according to the manufacturer.

Fuel tolerance

Simon Gray, 1100 Series product marketing manager, said, “Great efforts have been made with this engine to combat the problem of fuel quality, which can have a profound effect on productivity and in the worse scenarios severely curtail engine life.

"Not only have we achieved greater fuel tolerance but have raised the bar in terms of overall performance and durability for this package size."

The 1104D-E44TA was accompanied on Perkins’ stand at BICES by a full line up of its Wuxi-built Stage IIIA / Tier 3 equivalent engines.

These included the compact 404D-22T, the mechanical 1104D-44T and the electronic 1106D-E70TA, which was launched at Bauma China 2012. In addition, the mechanical 1106D-70TA and the company’s latest Stage IV / Tier 4 Final engine, the 1206F-E70TA, were also on display.

The BICES exhibition takes place from 15 to 18 October at the Jiu Hua International Exhibition Center.
