Crane rental company Pollock & Sons, based in New Zealand, used a Grove GMK6300L all terrain crane to lift equipment onto the roof of the Tauranga Hospital on the North Island.

The 6-axle, 300 tonne capacity all terrain crane was required to lift air-conditioning units and components and to help construct a mobile phone antenna. The heaviest item weighed 500 kg.

The GMK6300L was configured with 92.5 tonnes of counterweight and a 21 m luffing jib extension, taking its reach to 101 m. It carried out the lifts at an 82 metre radius, a company spokesperson said. Challenges during the project included a short time frame of ten hours.

Wayne Slater from Pollock & Sons, said, “Placing a few 500 kg objects on the roof of a six-storey building doesn’t sound hard but, add the variables of a hospital, 10 hours and limited space and, suddenly, you’re in a world of trouble. But we confidently knew what the GMK6300L is capable of. We got set up in no time, made our lifts without a hitch and finished well within the time-frame.”
