Franz Bracht Kran-Vermietung unloaded a 500 tonne power plant generator from a barge on the River Rhine and placed it on a custom-built goods vehicle at the Port of Krefeld, Germany.

The company used 600 tonne capacity Terex CC 2800-1 crawler crane to lift the 500 tonne gross load, which included cables, spreader and hook block. It was rigged with 36 metres of main boom and 180 tonnes of superstructure ballast. The central ballast weighed 60 tonnes, while the superlift counterweight weighed 310 tonnes.

"The challenge in this project was moving the crane under load with a reach of 17 m. This was made harder by the fact that we weren't able to position the crane directly at the edge of the dock, which was simply a consequence of the way the various structures at the port are set up. In other words, we had to keep a distance of several metres while working," said Roberto Menge, crane operator.

According to Terex it took one day to set up the crane at the Port of Krefeld, one day to perform the operation and one day for disassembly.
