Pump runs for 21 years without maintenance

Japanese pump manufacturer Tsurumi is to prove the performance of its products at Bauma, by exhibiting a pump that has been in operation for 21 years,  amassing 20,000 hours of run time, without maintenance.

The company’s KRS2-80 pump, which is designed to handle water containing mud and sand, has been used by the company as its demonstration model since 2021.

It is among Tsurumi’s most popular pump models and is capable of moving 1,700 litres of water a minute, even if it contains stones of up to 30mm in diameter.

With the pump having achieved the landmark running time “quite incidentally”, the company decided it would display the model in “live wet operation” at the Munich construction trade fair (stand A6.338), as “real proof of performance”.

“It was only after 21 years that the first service was carried out - purely as a safety measure in the run-up to the trade fair, so that nothing would go wrong.”

Despite having clocked up 20,000 hours of run time, the maintenance check on the pump revealed that only a seal and some other small parts needed to be replaced.

However, Tsurumi said it would also have “a workbench on site as a novelty for visitors”, just in case the pump should fail while at Bauma. “Pump technicians will use it to demonstrate how to service a pump,” it said.

Alongside the KRS2-80, Tsurumi will display its new KRDS series of safety pumps, which are IECEx and ATEX approved, and its digital Tsurumi Connect system.

The Tsurumi Connect system is designed to provide seamless monitoring of pumps and other machines, including those from other manufacturers.

It allows operators to determine the location of their machines, read out performance data and define alarm and failure scenarios.
