US readers who work in applications that require two or more people or who want to minimise adverse environmental impact on worksites now have the choice of using a Bobcat skid steer loader that features a radio remote control system.

Bobcat skid steers and tracked loaders that feature selectable joystick controls (SJC) and the company’s all-wheel steer loaders (AWS) can be fitted with the system. It allows operators to start a machine up and operate the drive. Lift, tilt and auxiliary hydraulic functions from up to 156 m (500 yd) away from the machine. The transmitter joystick activates the loader controls in the ISO control pattern. The transmitter system uses a rechargeable battery to provide up to 16 hours of continuous use.

The system is easy to install and remove, says Bobcat, allowing fleet owners to quickly move the system from one machine to another. The receiver and E-stop box are attached to the machine using magnets, and then the harness is connected, the rear window removed and a Remote Ready Identification Tag attached to the machine.

The transmitter weighs 3.9 kg (8.5 lb) without straps. While actual transmitting range will vary according to site conditions, visual contact with the loader and its travel path is always required. The system, which provides the loader with a maximum travel speed of 6.2 mph, has been approved by the company for use with many of its range of attachments.

Included in these attachments are hydraulic breakers, making the remote control option a good solution for demolition work.
