Contracts for phase one of the road building project to service the Meydan horseracing complex in Dubai have now been awarded

The Dubai Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has awarded Avecon Co the contract to build phase one of a new road network around the Meydan horseracing complex, worth in excess of AED 1 billion (US$272 million).

The RTA said the first phase of development will include construction of three crossings linking Muscat Road with the Dubai-Al Ain Road.

The authority also released details regarding phase two of the project, which is yet to be put out to tender but will cover the elevation of a section of Dubai-Al Ain Road to allow for the passage of a canal.

Phase two will also include a crossing at Al Khor Road, a road branching out of the Dubai-Al Ain road towards Ras Al Khor Road, and inbound and outbound roads to the Meydan complex.

Meydan is being billed as the most iconic horseracing complex ever constructed and will include a racecourse, one kilometre-long grandstand, a five-star hotel, restaurants, the Meydan Museum and Gallery and covered parking for more than 10000 cars.

The complex will also include a business park, dirt and turf racetracks, an 18-hole championship golf course and a residential and commercial district called Meydan City.
