RSC Equipment Rental's director of customer care Marilyn Steiger-Vandever has been named the inaugural winner of the company's new Freek Nijdam award.

Ms Steiger-Vandever developed a ‘No Customer Left Behind' programme, where new customers are contacted by RSC's customer care department to thank them for opening an account, answer any questions and to explain the benefits of choosing RSC.

The annual award, named after the company's former chief executive officer who passed away last year, recognises an employee "for outstanding creative thinking and determined problem solving to improve customer service, performance and growth in all areas of the business."

Erik Olsson, president and chief executive officer, said; "RSC takes pride in making customer satisfaction a top priority. Marilyn is a credit to the timeless commitment and value we place on excellent customer service, in this case outbound calls to make sure new customers feel welcome and have what they need."

As the winner of the first Freek Nijdam Award, Ms. Steiger-Vandever will receive a commemorative plaque and a $10,000 prize. Mr Nijdam was CEO of RSC Equipment Rental from 2002 to 2004.

Mr Olsson said choosing the first winner has been quite a challenge and "testament to the culture of continuous improvement here at RSC that Freek helped to inspire."
