Sea & Shore Projects used a Liebherr crawler crane to carry out coastal protection work in the harbour of Tristan da Cunha Island in the south Atlantic Ocean.

A circular coastal barrier is being built with concrete blocks in the harbour of the 98 square km island. The company chose a 105 tonne capacity Liebherr LR 1100 crawler crane, equipped with a clamshell grab.

The crane was loaded onto a cargo vessel in Cape Town and transported to Tristan da Cunha over nine days. The LR 1100 had to lift 80 concrete blocks weighing 10 tonnes each into place. The process was controlled using the hoist winch, with a line pull of 12 tonnes.

Another option for this task would have been loading off a pontoon. But the chosen on-land lifts allowed cost advantages and larger working radii were possible.

The robust steel structure of the LR 1100's uppercarriage is ideally suited for operation in the exposed harbour of Tristan da Cunha Island, added the manufacturer.
