Skanska’s UK hospital deal
13 March 2015
Skanska has been confirmed for a £140 million (€196 million) contract to deliver the new Papworth Hospital in Cambridge, UK.
The company had been named as the preferred bidder last July for the design, build, finance, and maintenance responsibilities for the project.
Covering an area of 40,000m2, the 300-bed facility will provide seven operating theatres and five catheterisation labs.
The hospital will be built as a public-private partnership with Papworth Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, using sustainable energy principles.
It has been designed to achieve an EPC (Energy Performance Certificate) B rating, which is said to be a first for a hospital in the UK. It will be served by an emissions-reducing ground-source heat pump system.
The hospital will be developed using BIM (building information modelling) to deliver greater energy efficiency. Its flexible design will enable future alterations to its facilities.
The contract for Skanska follows confirmation of its other major scheme in Cambridge - developing the €388 million AstraZeneca scientific research facilities on the Cambridge Biomedical Campus.
